Sorry to those of you who are seeing this twice; it's your fault for being in so many awesome comms. Anyway. I did another blog post on disability issues in TOS. This time I talked about "Plato's Stepchildren" and how Alexander was treated as the only Platonian without telekinetic powers. |

| Star Trek Study |
[Mar. 21st, 2012|06:35 pm] |
Mods: Sorry if this is inappropriate, feel free to pull.
I am an undergraduate writing a thesis on virtual communities with a focus on the variety of type of communities that term can encompass. As part of that, and part of a project for a computer mediate communication course, I am studying fandom and its use of various mediums. I want to look at how fandom views the communities as they exist on Livejournal, AO3, message boards, archive sites, and other spaces. To try and keep things manageable, I am specifically looking at Star Trek fandoms, and likely sticking largely to ToS fandom since that is what I am familiar with. I have been largely lurking in the Star Trek Fandom since the 2009 movie, so I am definitely a new wave fan. I have poked around at some of the classic ToS authors as well as read the more recent big names in XI. I participate in other fandoms as well, and generally enjoy seeing the amount of introspection fandom has around themselves and their source material. I hope to add to that introspection in a way that comes from a place that is honest to the community. I will be posting a survey in the next week or so that interested people can fill out, as well as asking for volunteers who might like to be interviewed. I am especially interested in fans that also attend conventions, and those who have been involved with the community since before the internet. I am interested in how the community has changed since moving to the internet as well as how it changes as it moves between internet platforms. I am posting this now to give everyone a heads up, and to ask if there are any concerns before I start.

| "The Menagerie" and disability |

Hi there. Sorry if you're seeing this twice. I run a blog on disability in sci-fi/fantasy and I recently tackled the grandaddy of disability in sci-fi television, "The Menagerie." If you like Pike and think it was kind of weird that Spock kidnapped the guy, stop on by the blog. |
